What you need to know about detox and Dieting

Let's start from the beginning. Detoxification (detox) is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body, which is mainly carried out by the liver. Body detoxification has become very popular in the last several years.  You wont have to search far on the internet to find a variety of delicious and surprisingly nutritious Smoothies that can cleanse your system and help you loose weight at the same time! Most of those claims are false. It only takes a little common sense to know that drinking a sugary, fructose-filled fruit smoothie is NOT going to help you loose those extra pounds around your waist and hips. In fact, those fruity so-called weight-loss smoothies will most likely make you crave more sugar and you could end up eating something you KNOW isn't good for you, but tastes really good.

When you hear or see an advertisement that says, "tastes great and you lose weight" or loose weight and eat whatever you want" run the other direction immediately because they are purposely lying to you and trying to separate you from your hard-earned cash!  Let's be honest, detoxing your body isn't a silver-bullet to good health. But it is a very good start! As part of a lifestyle change, detoxing can put you on your way to losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle.

The Liver and the roll it plays in Body Detoxification

The human body is incredible. It's like a well-oiled machine that can actually detox itself. But before  go into the details of that I want talk about a concern a lot of my readers have. They say they've read that most nutritionists say detox drinks don't work and the body does not need them, and that they don't help anyone loose weight.

The answer is simple: Nutritionists are responding to ads that claim a detox drink alone, with no change in eating habits, no exercise, no lifestyle change can make you loose 20 pounds in 20 days by simply drinking it and sitting on your butt!  Hopefully, I've educated my readers to know better than that! You need a plan that works with your body, your life and your motivation level. Set your goals, put a time limit on achieving them, fill in the details like eating schedules, recipes, and activities like walking, running, swimming, or working out at the gym (or more likely, at home thanks to Covid-19). The body detoxes itself through the liver, kidneys, digestive system, lungs, blood, and just about every cell in our body. But the liver is the main workhorse -it is the organ that does the heavy-lifting because it detoxes our body from the worse kinds of toxins and poisons.

The primary functions of the liver are:

  • Bile production and excretion.

  • Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs.

  • Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

  • Enzyme activation.

  • Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals.

  • Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors.

While all of those Liver functions are important for the body's own natural detox cleanse to function properly, Enzymes play the most important role because they determine the overall health of the Liver. The Liver is acts as a filter. It helps our bodies metabolize the six essential nutrients like  Carbohydrates (CHO), Lipids (fats), Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Water. It also eliminates harmful chemicals like heavy metals, alcohol and drugs. Under normal conditions, the liver does it's work well, but certain kinds of conditions can actually prevent them from working at all.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition website said in a study that "Weight loss was shown to be associated with improvements in liver enzymes and improvements of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. However, some evidence also shows that liver enzymes may transiently increase immediately after a dietary-induced weight loss."

That basically means that the conditions of the Liver are controlled by how healthy your Enzymes are. I checked the list of activities one can do to improve the function of Enzymes in the liver and they are the exact same activities one would engage in if they were doing a full-body detox!  Remember, the Liver is the only organ in the human body that can regenerate - that is replace bad tissue with new cells. So it turns out what you put into your body can affect how your liver functions. How your liver functions can help you loose weight if you are eating the right stuff.

So eat the right stuff, (healthy detox drinks) get some exercise and say goodbye to those unwanted pounds.
